According to Japanese Government sources, the construction of a coastal monitoring base on Yonaguni Island for Japan Ground Self Defense Forces would start on Apr. 19.

The Japanese military units are scheduled to begin deployment on the island by the end of 2015. The purpose of the base is to strengthen the defense capacity of the southwestern maritime area of Okinawan islands, and keep an eye on the Chinese activities.

Opinions among the island residents on building the facility have been sharply divided, and some people expect that there could be some kind of a movement organized against the plan.  At the same time, the government says that they have been able to purchase nearly all the land they need for the new base.
