Groundbreaking ceremony for AEON Rycom Mall held

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new AEON Rycom Mall was held at he former Awase Golf Course site on Feb. 28.

At the ceremony, AEON Group president Souichi Okazaki stated, “Hawaii has the Ala Moana Shopping Center, an element that Okinawa’s tourism is missing. We will aim to be the number one resort mall in Southeast Asia.”

The mall that will have approx. 78,000 square meters of floor space is going to be the 4th largest AEON Mall in Japan once completed with parking space to 4,000 cars. An ANA resort hotel and other leisure facilities are also included in the complex.

Kitanakagusuku Village mayor who also attended stated, “This mall will have a great economic effect for the central part of Okinawa. By creating more employment to residents, it will sure have a great impact to the overall economy of the area as well. And it will also add value to the Okinawan tourism.”

The mall is scheduled to open in spring 2015, and create employment to 3,000 people.
