Sweets maker to open shop at Naha International Terminal

A major Japanese sweets maker, Tokachi Amanatto Honpo, announced it would open a store called Shuri Shunju in the new Naha Airport International Terminal, in April.

Tokachi Amanatto Honpo is a well-know maker of Japanese sweets based in Saitama Prefecture, which has 25 stores mainly in the Saitama area. The new store will feature Okinawa inspired sweets only. The company plans to open another three stores on Okinawa by September.

A company spokesman says that using Okinawan ingredients, such as brown sugar, they have developed new sweets to fill their shelves. The company aims at sales of ¥200 million during fiscal 2015.

The company decided to locate the shop in the international terminal after noticing the increase of foreign tourists to Okinawa.

Tokachi Amanatto Honpo President Yasuo Fukui says, “There are many tourists from abroad who come to Japan through Okinawa for the first time. We think adding Okinawan flavor to our sweets would be a good way to introduce Japanese sweets to the foreign visitors.”
