Uruma Gelato café holds beach cleaning, mini fair

After the beach cleaning, the Uruma event features local entertainment all afternoon long.

A small café called Uruma Gelato, located in the Yonashiro district of Uruma City, is organizing an annual beach cleaning, fair and flower carnival this Sunday.

Five hula groups perform on stage at the 1st Teruma Hula Carnival from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

This marks the fourth time the event is being staged. The event begins with a 1½ hour beach cleaning at 10 a.m., after which Uruma Gelato will serve all participants a shiqwasa flavored gelato, a kind of sherbet. While the participants enjoy their gelato, Hideki Chinen gives a short 15-minute introduction of the “Wonders of Teruma Shore.”

At 11:30 a.m. the “Only One Fair” begins featuring live music, taiko drums and eisa dancers, while 35 stands at the event sell vegetables, drinks, and offer manicures, massages, and local products. From 3 to 5:30 p.m., the 1st Teruma Hula Carnival is scheduled to be on stage, featuring performances by five different hula dance groups.

Uruma Gelato is located on Route 37 on the northern coast of Katsuren peninsula. The gelato the café serves is made on site using local ingredients. It comes in several flavors including chocolate, strawberry, and milk, and some more exotic ones such as red pepper, parsley, rum, Okinawan sea salt, and some others.

Other flavors on the menu are organic tea, shiqwasa, and chocolate. While enjoying the gelato, customer can enjoy a nice view of the Kin Bay, and Ikei, Miyagi and Hamahiga Islands across it. Admission to the event is free as is the parking in the area.
