Buoys brought to Camp Schwab before dawn

Trucks contracted by the Okinawa Defense Bureau carried equipment and materials into Camp Schwab, Sunday morning before dawn, for starting the drilling surveys on the sea floor that are necessary before the landfill can begin.

About 42 trucks and trailers entered the base between 2:30 and 3:15 a.m. carrying buoys and floats to mark the reclamation site offshore.

There were two local residents who are against the construction at the gate, and one of them stood on the street in order to stop the trucks from going through the gate but both were restrained by police.

When informed about the activity, Nago City Mayor Susumu Inamine expressed anger against the Japanese government, saying “Is as if they are deceiving the Okinawan citizens. Knowing there are citizens who are against the construction, they go behind their backs and do this.”

The buoys were brought in after midnight so as not to disturb the guirls.
