Just before contractors for the Naha Defense Facilities Bureau started transporting buoys and construction materials to Camp Shcwab to prepare for the land reclamation for the new runways on Henoko Bay, the Nakagusuku Coast Guard put up a sign, Jul. 19, to restrict entry to an uninhabited tiny island about 500 meters offshore of Camp Schwab’s coast. The Coast Guard is in charge of the pier that is the only point of entry on the island.

According to the Nakagusuku Coast Guard spokesman, the use of the pier will be prohibited but “it doesn’t mean that we are restricting entry to the island,” even though it’s practically impossible to go on the island without the use of the pier.
