Dam festival set to educate, entertain

The overflow canal of the dam has a pair of water slides for kids to enjoy.

Taiho Dam and Shioya Bay go into the spotlight Saturday as the Taiho Dam Festival comes to life to enlighten island residents of the importance of the forest, lake, rivers and Taiho Dam.

The MESH Doc Helicopter is on display from noon to 3 p.m.

Organized initially for residents to have a deeper understanding of the interaction between the dam and nature, it’s become a popular setting for people from across Okinawa.  With the Taiho Dam as the main venue, there will be many activities provided for visitors.

There will be canoe tours for a small fee of ¥500 at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:40 p.m. Saturday, while other activities such as shell lamp making, accessories making, basket making, wood and craft classes are free.

The MESH and Doc Helicopter will be available for observation from noon to 3 p.m., and the Taiho Dam Festival promises to have additional events on the docket.
