Money woes make Tedako Festival fireworks fizzle

The 37th Urasoe Tedako Festival committee is in a tough spot.

The city has cut back ¥30 million in funding available for this weekend festival, and although the committee has tried to cover the smaller budget from the city coffers with donations from private businesses, it turned out to be impossible to cover all of the deficit.

The festival fireworks is what will be influenced most. Last year fireworks funds were ¥3.4 million but this year only ¥2.6 million worth of pyrotechnics  will be shot to the skies, four-thirds of last year’s extravaganza.
