The Gubernatorial Candidate Selection Committee consisting of five groups, the Social Democratic Party, People’s Life Party, Communist Party, Socialist Masses Party and the Okinawa Prefectural Assembly, held a meeting, Sunday, in which the members decided to support current Naha City Mayor Takeshi Onaga as their candidate in the Okinawa governor election in November.

The group is scheduled to officially announce its decision at a press conference on Jul. 26th.

However, although Onaga has confirmed that he is against the construction of the new base in Henoko, he has not made up his mind on whether he would run for the governor’s post. Onaga is a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, the same as incumbent Governor Hirokazu Nakaima, who already has confirmed his intention to run for the third term.
