Tourist dies in hotel pool

One man died and another was hospitalized in critical condition in two water-related accidents over the three-day weekend.

A 32-year-old male tourist who had been swimming in the pool of a hotel in Naha died. Also 41-year-old Itoman resident drowned at a beach while swimming with his daughter and is in critical condition in a hospital.

32-year-old Takaaki Kato from Nagoya was found at the bottom of the outdoor pool of Hotel Nikko Grand Castle in Shuri, Naha City, Sunday afternoon. Kato was in cardiopulmonary arrest when he was taken to a hospital where he died next morning.

Naha Police is investigating the accident. According to the hotel management there are always two lifeguards on duty at the pool sides, but it’s possible they found him too late.

A 41-year-old Itoman resident was found floating face up just before noon about 100 meters offshore at Odo Beach in Itoman City. According to some witnesses the man had gone swimming with his daughter who was paddling around on a plastic floating toy. Investigators suspect that the man was caught in a strong current that local residents say is prevalent in the area.

The man was taken to a hospital where he remains unconscious and listed in critical condition. Itoman Police are continuing investigation into the accident.
