Two more Korean airlines to start on Naha–Seoul route

Travel between Seoul in South Korea and Naha is becoming a little easier as two Korean airline companies, LCC carriers Jeju Air and T’way Airlines will each start a service of one round trip per day.  Jeju Air is scheduled to begin on Dec. 1st, and T’way Airlines is scheduled to make its first flight on Dec. 25th.

In addition Jin Air, which is already running regular flights between Seoul and Naha, will increase its flights to two round trips per day from Oct. 26th.

Jeju Air and T’way Airlines both use Boeing 738-type airframe, which has 189 to 186 seats.  JinAir is using Boeing 737-800 with 180seats on its Seoul-Naha flights.

Seijun Wakugawa, the Chief of Okinawa Prefecture Department of Culture, Tourism and Sports says, “The Prefecture aims at making Naha Airport into a hub. New airlines coming to Okinawa are very much welcome, and we would like to stabilize the routes.  In order to improve tourism exchange, hopefully people from Okinawa will travel to Korea, too,” Wakugawa said.

According to prefectural statistics, the number of Korean tourists coming to Okinawa increased by 2.2 times compared to figures of the last fiscal year with 98,400 people making the trip.  This year, the number of tourists from Korea, during the period from April through August, has continued to increase, and now stands 64.9% above the same time last year at 51,600.
