Construction work off Camp Schwab resumes
Contractors hired by Okinawa Defense Bureau started to install a temporary pier and oil boom on the ocean off Henoko, Nago, on Jan. 15th. The Bureau is scheduled to complete the quay construction work off Camp Schwab and seabed boring survey under the sea before starting the landfill for the new runways.
The national government had suspended the construction on the ocean at Henoko since Nov. 22nd last year in consideration of the Nago mayoral election last January, the prefectural gubernatorial election in November and the Japanese lower house election in December.
Okinawa Defense Bureau started to remove about 100 demonstrators sitting in front of the Camp Schwab main gate in the morning of Jan. 15th resulting in a confrontation between the prefectural police and the demonstrators.
