Marine arrested for trespassing

Nago Police arrested a 22-year-old U.S. Marine on suspicion of trespassing into two private apartments in Nago on Jan. 19th.

According to Nago Police, Private Jonathan Darby, stationed on Camp Schwab, was arrested on suspicion of trespassing into two separate apartments in Onishi, Nago City.  When questioned by the police, Darby admitted to entering the apartments.

Investigators say Darby trespassed into the third-floor apartment of a 44-year-old government employee, and then also went into a 53-year-old restaurant worker’s apartment on the fourth floor of the same building, around 5:30 a.m. on the 19th.  He told the police he entered into both apartments through unlocked doors, and ran away when the residents saw him.

Both residents called the police, and about 30 minutes later, a police patrol found Darby on a street around 100 meters away from the apartment building, and arrested him.

Only a matter of time. Incidents like this, which are just stupid, can only result in a return of the strict curfew rules. Not that I agree with the curfew, but I’ve been on Oki long enough to see the pattern. Curfew in place, incidents go down. Curfew relaxed and, for awhile, no problems. Then, a serious incident (rape, assault, rise of DUIs, BnEs like this) and bam, curfew comes back.

Which is why I’ll never attempt to go back. Freedoms are lost on little islands like Okinawa because they can enforce it there. Couldn’t even buy a beer at a store, which seems illegal and monopolistic by the way. Go to a place like Germany or England. Military can’t enforce these kinds of rules there. Curfew is a joke anyway. People will still do what they want. People were getting in trouble before they lifted the curfew.
