Taiwan’s Taroko Group eyes sports business on Okinawa

Taroko Group that is one of the largest textile makers in Taiwan and manages sports leisure facilities has published a plan to expand its business to Okinawa. If the plan becomes a reality, it would be the company’s first business venture in Japan.

To this end, the company is scheduled to launch a local subsidiary on Okinawa sometime in February.  The company aims at promoting sports exchanges between Okinawa and Taiwan, and the plans include constructing a large commercial complex on Okinawa that includes a sports facility. In addition, the company has a vision to establish a professional baseball team based on Okinawa in a few years time to join in the Taiwanese Professional Baseball League.

The core business of the Taroko Group is the Taroko Textile Corporation. Lately, the company has expanded its activities to management of multiple real-estate developments and commercial facilities.

An affiliate company, Taroko Sports, manages batting practice ranges and bowling alleys. In cooperation with the Japanese Suzuka Circuit, a motor racing company, Taroko Spors is scheduled to open this year a large commercial facility in Takao, Taiwan, that includes a motor racing course. This would be the first such facility in Taiwan.

In Okinawa, the company plans to manage some batting practice facilities starting in May, and start publishing information about Taiwanese professional baseball teams in addition to selling Taiwanese foods.
