Army Captain fined ¥300,000 for attacking police officer

The Naha Summary Court slapped a penalty of ¥300,000 to U.S. Army Captain Nathaniel Curley stationed on Torii Station, on Jan. 15. He was convicted of a violation of the Road Traffic Law.

Curley drove through a police checkpoint, Dec. 18, in Miyagi, Chatan, and being stopped after a police chase, tackled a police officer. The policeman suffered minor bruises and scratches in the incident, and Curley was arrested.

A breathalyzer test showed that he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his breath. This was the first alcohol-related case involving U.S. military personnel involved after the military relaxed the liberty policy.
