OTS Rental Car Co., a subsidiary of Okinawa Tourist Service Inc., has opened a duty free shopping counter in their rental car office at Toyosaki, Tomigusuku City.  This is the first duty free counter in a rental car office in Japan.

The shop sells popular electric home appliances with an eye especially on tourists from China, including rice cookers and thermos bottles.  Japanese rice, popular among Chinese tourists is also on sale.

OTS set up the shop in cooperation with Okinawa Shokuryo Corporation, a local rice distributor, and Zojirushi Corp., a major manufacturer of innovative household products.  The duty free shop targets rental car users from overseas, and aims at improved convenience as they can shop popular big electric household items when they return their rental car at the office.

OTS has installed a Reimei Computer POS system and a passport reader by M2 Mobility Inc. of Tokyo in the shop for effective operation. The POS system enables the shop to shorten the time of procedures related to tax free shopping from an average seven minutes to two.

According to OTS, about 40 % of their rental car customers are foreign tourists, and their number is increasing every year.  The total number of rental car users in Okinawa has been estimated to have increased six-fold in just past two years.
