Okinawa City opens doors to Craftwork Fair

All sorts of wood works are well represented at the Craft Fair.

The 13th Okinawa City Craftwork Fair is now in progress, taking place at Plaza House Shopping Center Thursday through Sunday.

Stained glass from previous exhibition.

This is one of the biggest craftwork exhibitions and sale events in Okinawa.  More than 70 famous local studios and artisans on Okinawa will gather together.  Starting at noon tomorrow, an auction will be held at the 1st floor, a good chance to get products from popular studios at reasonable prices.  The Craftwork Fair takes place each day 10 a.m. ~ 8 p.m. on all three floors of the Plaza House Shopping Center.

In addition to the exhibition and sale, there are artists’ demonstrations and a variety of hands-on booths featuring papermaking, Shisa coloring, weaving, glass pendant making and more. Last year, there was a waiting list for the woven coaster making booth.  For those wanting to get genuine traditional crafts and local artists’ products, this is the event.  Works of craft contest winners will be put on display too.

Free shuttle bus service between Okinawa City Hall and the event venue is offered on the14th and 15th. All products shown and sold at the Craft Fair are made in Okinawa.  Included are china, woodwork, glass, dying and textiles, leather, accessories, audio gear and guitars.  Admission is free, and organizers point out that while everything is for sale at bargain prices, there are no requirements for purchases.  At some booths, there will be opportunities for visitors to observe crafts being created.
