Abe to visit for memorial, not to meet with Onaga

The annual memorial ceremony for all victims of the war on Okinawa, and marking the 70th anniversary of the end of the war, is scheduled to take place tomorrow at the Peace Memorial Park in Mabuni, Itoman City.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit Okinawa and participate in the ceremony. Although this is the first time for Abe to visit Okinawa since Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga took up his post as the governor in December last year, Abe is not scheduled to have a meeting with Onaga.

All public schools on Okinawa will have a day off tomorrow, in commemoration of the Memorial Day of the War Dead, known in Japanese as “Irei-no Hi.”
