A sanitation worker was killed on job when he was crushed between a garbage truck and concrete pole in Ikehara, Okinawa City, on Friday.

According to Okinawa City Police, 71-year-old sanitation worker Zenyu Arakaki was loading cardboard boxes into the truck when the accident happened.  A doctor who arrived at the scene with an emergency crew pronounced Arakaki dead.

Investigators say Arakaki had worked on loading cardboard behind the truck, when the truck somehow started to reverse and his head was smashed between the truck and the concrete utility pole.  Arakaki’s co-worker who’s in his 40’s was at the scene but he was reportedly outside of the truck when the accident happened.

Okinawa Police is investigating the cause of the accident.
