Onaga likely to meet U.S. Ambassador Kennedy in Tokyo
Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga has reportedly made final arrangements for a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy some day next week in Tokyo. This would mark the first time Onaga meets the ambassador after being elected Governor.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the meeting is scheduled to take place on the 19th. In the meeting, Onaga is likely to call Kennedy for rethinking the MCAS Futenma relocation plan to Henoko.
Although Kennedy has indicated her intention to visit Okinawa on Jun. 23rd to take part in the annual memorial ceremony for the war victims on Okinawa at the Peace Memorial Park in Itoman City, officials have concluded that it would be unbecoming to talk about the base issues on the day of commemorating war victims.
Thus, Onaga is likely to go to Tokyo prior to Jun. 23rd to deliver his thoughts about the base construction in Henoko directly to Kennedy.
