Two Japanese former boxing champs inducted to Hall of Fame

Two more Japanese former professional boxing champions are now members of the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York.

The induction ceremony at the IBHOF took place on Jun. 14th as Yoko Gushiken and late Masao Oba, the reigning WBA flyweight champion when he died in a road accident in 1973 at the age of just 23, were selected for induction to the Hall of Fame in the selection cycle of 2015. They became the 4th and 5th Japanese boxers so honored.

59-year-old Gushiken is from Ishigaki Island, and a former WBA light-flyweight champion who defended his title 13 times in a row from 1976 to 1981.  At the ceremony, Gushiken said in his speech, “This is a wonderful day that I will never forget,” in English, and continued in Japanese, “I am delighted that I was selected into the Boxing Hall of Fame to join other fine former champions.”
