On the first day of the summer vacation for school children, an 8-year-old elementary school boy from Itoman City drowned in a water accident at Yone, Tomigusuku, Sunday.

According to Tomigusuku Police, the boy had come along with his family to fish at the seashore between Shiosai Park and Senaga Island. He had gone into the ocean from the sandy shore adjacent to the park with his 7-year-old cousin, but was swept out to the sea by waves around noon, and disappeared out of sight.

Tomigusuku Police, fire department and Naha Coast Guard searched and found him under water about 300 meters offshore just before dusk on the same day. The boy was taken to a hospital in Haebaru where he was confirmed dead.
