Large demonstration to take place in Naha Friday

A large scale demonstration against the new national security legislation pushed by the government of prime Minister Shinjo Abe is scheduled to take place Jul. 31st starting 6 p.m. at the ‘Citizens’ Square’ in front of the Prefectural Building in Izumizaki, Naha.

Organizers say that they are planning to issue a plea to the government demanding that the proposed legislation be scrapped.

After the meeting, protesters plan to march on Kokusai Street. Organizers expect 2,000 people to attend the demonstration. The chairman of the organization planning the rally is Tetsumi Takara, a constitutional scholar and professor at the University of the Ryukyus.

During the rally, lawyers, mothers from the public and seniors who experienced the war are scheduled to deliver speeches denouncing the new legislation.
