Universal Studios Japan CEO Glenn Gumpel visited Okinawa to meet Governor Takashi Onaga for the first time, Jul. 17th.

The meeting took place at the prefectural office. IN the meeting, Gumpel explained his company’s plan to create a theme park in Okinawa, and asked the governor for the prefecture’s support for the venture. He specifically asked support in the form of an upgrade in the island’s transportation infrastructure.

Although Gumpel did not clearly state the planned site of the new facility, according to previous reports, the company has planned to locate the new facility next to the Ocean Expo Park in Motobu. Tsuyoshi Morioka, the marketing chief of the Universal Studios Japan, who accompanied Gumpel on the visit, indicated that the company would like to start the construction during fiscal 2016, and have the theme park open before the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020.
