City survey finds no PCB in waters off Kinser

Recently, a university research team discovered high concentrations of PCB and DDT in Okinawa’s poisonous habu snakes in the areas surrounding the U.S. Camp Kinser in Urasoe City.

The discovery prompted the Urasoe City Government to order a survey on waters in the ocean off the base and a river that flows through the area. Investigators took water samples from six locations including Minatogawa Sea Wall and spots around Shirinka.

The city government announced the results of the survey on Sep. 17. According to the results, no PCB has been detected. The surveyors also collected shellfish from the areas for testing, and results of those tests will be announced to the public as soon as they become available.
