Shigeru Kasugai, the 63-year-old president of Kushiro Shinbun newspaper company, was found floating unconscious in the ocean at Yabiji, Ikema Island in Miyakojima City, Friday morning. He was taken to a hospital but efforts to resuscitate him were not successful, and he was pronounced dead about 14:30 on the same day.

Kasugai was visiting Miyako on business to participate in an anniversary ceremony of a local newspaper company. Friday morning, he joined in a snorkeling tour but an instructor who had accompanied the tour found him floating on the sea shortly afterwards.

Miyako Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the accident.
