Tsunami warning prompts school closures, delays

A huge magnitude 8.3 earthquake that struck Chile prompted officials on Okinawa to issue a tsunami warning that caused some public schools to call off or delay the start of classes on Friday.

Ayahashi Elementary and Junior High School in Uruma City called off the classes for the day because school staff could not come to the school as the Kaichu Road remained closed all day.

Three public schools in Zamami Island were also closed for the whole day. In addition to these schools, there were several schools in the low-lying areas of Nakagusuku Village that delayed the start of the classes.

Tsunami observed in Okinawa was 20 cm measured at 13:16 in Hirara, Miyakojima City on Miyako Island. A 10 cm surge was observed at 13:06 in Naha, and the same 10 cm at 11:14 at Ishigaki Port.
