The Japanese Government has decided to provide a fund of $11.3 million for the U.S. Government towards the relocation costs of the U.S. Marines on Okinawa to Guam.

Fumio Kishida, the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and U.S. Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy exchanged letters to confirm the transaction on Oct. 20th. The fund is earmarked for the maintenance of training support facilities and designing the layout of the training yard.

In May last year, the governments amended an agreement concluded in 2009 concerning the plan to the relocate the U.S. Marines in Japan to allow the Japanese government funds to be used for the military training facility. The ceiling of the Japanese share of the costs has been set at about $2.8 billion.
