The Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation is sponsoring a three-day Rocktoberfest this weekend on Torii Beach. Although the name implies the world famous beer festival, the event in Okinawa has a healthy dose of local flavor added with some of the best rock bands Okinawa has to offer. Of course, cold beer will be flowing, too.

Justin K. Evers of Torii MWR says “This is a great opportunity for Okinawans and Americans to get together for a festival on the beach, as everyone has a three-day weekend. The Americans have the Columbus Day and the local people have the Sports Day, so everyone is off on Monday and can have a rest after the party.” He adds that “We have six bands each day playing the best rock on the island.”

In addition to plenty of rock’n roll and cold beer, there are car burnouts, second stage performances, good food and, of course, the beach.

Gates open at 5 p.m. on all three days, and the shows begin at 6 p.m. Friday bands include Essex, Ask Me Another, Valve Fiction, Saturday Casual Jam, Infinity Star World and 9 Long Lives.

The festival is free and open to all.

On Saturday, Transient, Run It To Ground, Stinky, AS Alliance, Illuminati and Jigokuguruma are on stage.

Keiji By Zero, Pryzm. Bloom, Crystal Hearts, Murasaki and Motley Crüe Cover Band round up the Sunday’s line-up.

Organizers say that the band line-up could change for unforeseen reasons.

They also remind guests that no glass containers, pets, outside food or beverages or BBQs are allowed on Torii Beach. The festival is open to all Japanese national and I.D. card holders. Designated drivers are strongly recommended, although taxi and daiko services will be available to get everyone home safely.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to Oct. 23, 24 & 25.
