Nanjo showcases best of residents’ gardens

Twice a year Nanjo City organizes an increasingly popular special week-long event, when public can walk through and tour private gardens in the city. The fall event begins Saturday Nov. 21st, and the gardens are scheduled to stay open through Sunday, Nov. 29.

20 selected private gardens, including several for the first time, are scheduled to participate in the 12th edition of the Open Garden in Nanjo. A garden Festa takes place concurrently at Yuinchi Hotel Nanjo, which features displays and sale of flowers, young trees and garden supplies.

The gardens are open daily from 10:00 to 17:00. A visitor passport, which allows the visitor to see all 20 private yards and gardens, costs ¥500. High school students and younger children are free. The passports are sold at 11 locations in Nanjo City, including Nanjo Commercial Museum, Sugar Hall, (closed on Mondays), Yuinchi Hotel Nanjo, Nanjo City Hall Ozato Branch and Nanjo City Hall Tamagusuku Branch. Okinawa Tourist Service organizes daily bus tours for those who want to see the gardens. The cost is ¥8,980yen for adults departing from Nago, or ¥7,980 for departures from Naha, Tomigusuku and Nanjo City. Children on the bus cost ¥7,480 or ¥6,840 respectively for 6-11-year olds and ¥6,980 or ¥5,980 for 3-5-year olds. Infants are free of charge.
