Fukushima elephants to spend second winter on Okinawa

Two Asian elephants, 28-year-old Tonsai and 19-year-old Boonthong, came to Okinawa Kodomo-no-Kuni Zoo from Tohoku Safari Park in Fukushima Prefecture for the winter, and were introduced to the public on Dec. 16th.

This is the second time for the two pachyderms to move to Okinawa to spend the winter here following their last year visit.

Tohoku Safari Park introduced the elephants from Laos in order to cheer up disaster victims after the Great East Japan Earthquake. During their stay in Kodomo-no-Kuni Zoo, visitors can experience riding on their back and feeding them, both for which there’s a fee.
