Ryukyu Bank to install ATMs for foreign cards

One of the biggest complaints of foreign visitors to Okinawa has been the inability to withdraw cash from their credit and debit cards anywhere on the island.

But now help is on the way as the Ryukyu Bank Co., Ltd will start a new ATM service that allows foreign credit and cash card holders to withdraw cash starting from this spring. The bank says it aims to adapt to a growing demand from overseas tourists visiting the island.

This is the first time for any bank to start this service in Okinawa. Users of VISA, MasterCard and China UnionPay cards issued in foreign countries will be able to use their cards to withdraw Japanese Yen from small ATMs installed in 17 locations on the island including San-A Kyozuka City in Urasoe City and Meio University in Nago.

The new ATM machines will be able to service customers in three languages, English, Chinese and Korean. The new ATMs are scheduled to start service in April.
