First time participants win Sunday’s Okinawa Marathon

The 24th Okinawa Marathon took place Sunday in the central part of the island with both start and finish line at the Okinawa Prefecture Comprehensive Athletic Park in Okinawa City.

The winner of the men’s category was 22-year-old trail runner Rui Ueda from Tokyo who completed the course in 2 hours 28 minutes 9 seconds. 18-year-old high school girl Ayaka Fujimoto from Chiba Prefecture won the race in women’s class with 2 hours 47 minutes 31 seconds. Both were running their first Okinawa Marathons.

In the second place in men’s race was 28-year-old Kyohei Yonamine from Urasoe City, and 31-year-old Seika Imamura from Hiroshima Prefecture took the second place in women’s race.

13,608 runners took on the road on Sunday with 11,330 of them participating in the full marathon, and 2,278 people for the 10-km road race. 8,918 runners, or 78.71 %, completed the full marathon.
