Hiroshima Carp donates ¥100 million to Okinawa City

Hiroshima Toyo Carp, a Japanese professional baseball team, made a donation of ¥100 million to Okinawa City on Monday. In a press conference on Tuesday, Okinawa City Mayor Sachio Kuwae announced the donation and expressed his appreciation stating the city would consider carefully how to use the donation money.

Hiroshima Toyo Carp has held its spring training camp in Okinawa City since 1982. When Kenta Maeda, a popular former pitcher with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp transferred to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the U.S. Major Leagues in January, the Hiroshima Carp team owner Hajime Matsuda had requested that the Dodgers make the donation as a part of the $20 million transfer fee, The donation was earmarked for a Hiroshima Carp-related place such as Okinawa City. Maeda himself signed an eight-year, $25 million contract with the Dodgers that includes $10 million a year in incentives.
