Fisherman found dead on his drifting boat

The Japan Regional Coast Guard received a phone call from Naha Fishermen’s Union Monday afternoon, reporting a fishing boat, which had left Ikema Port in Miyakojima City on Jun. 17th and was expected to return Monday morning, had not yet reached the port, and also did not answer to radio calls.

Then Miyako Marine Safety Station dispatched a helicopter and a patrol vessel to search for the boat. They found it adrift about 220km north-northeast of Tarama Island. The searchers also discovered a man lying down on the deck of the boat. They later confirmed the man was dead.

As the boat had just the captain in 60’s onboard when it left the port, the coast guard assumes that the dead man is the captain.
