Man held for murder after stabbing another to death

A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder on Kume Island after he fatally stabbed a 36-year-old man with a kitchen knife, Sunday morning.

According to Naha Police, Akira Kobashigawa stabbed Ryuji Otonashi in the chest with the knife in the morning of Jun. 5th, on a road in a residential area in the Torishima district of Kume Island. Investigators say Kobashigawa had visited Otonashi’s house, and the two apparently had an argument. The men came out and Kobashigawa stabbed Otonashi on the street in front of the house.

According to some neighbors, the two men had been having arguments for the last couple of days, although they did not know what the arguments had been about.

Kobashigawa has reportedly admitted that he stabbed Otonashi, however, he has denied the intention of murdering him.

Kobashikawa told investigators that after stabbing Otonashi, he went to the area police box in order to turn himself in soon after the stabbing occurred, but there was no officer in the police box. He then called 110 from the police box and notified the phone operator of his conduct. A police officer, who arrived at the scene, confirmed Kobashigawa was holding a bloody knife.

Otonashi was taken to a hospital where he was confirmed dead in the same morning.
