Nago woman loses ¥2.14 million to computer scam

An unidentified woman in Nago City was scammed of ¥2.14 million through her own computer.

According to Nago Police, the woman had been watching a video site on her computer, when the screen suddenly changed to show a message, “Your enrollment is completed!” and a telephone number to call.

She called to the displayed fixed-line phone number that was outside of Okinawa, and a man who answered told her that she needed to pay ¥200,000 as a cancellation fee. The woman then electronically transferred the money on June 20th. She then received a call from a “website manager” who told her she needed to pay late charges for a different website, and she transferred the money on July 11th and 12th.
