Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) has opened “OIST Marine Science Station,” a marine science laboratory at Seragaki Fishing Port in Onna Village that aims to work to advance marine research.

The new Marine Science Station, the first OIST facility located outside of the university campus, is designed to offer OIST scientists and other researchers a facility to conduct their research.

The facility consists of a building with 1,200 square meters of floor space and a site area of 7,800 square meters. It’s equipped with a three-meter deep pool and 80 water tank systems that provide a living environment for various animals living in the sea, like corals and crown of thorns.

In the inauguration ceremony, Wednesday, OIST President Jonathan Dorfan stated, “It’s a great honor that the OIST Marine Science Station has been named as a world-class research facility, to which we will welcome innovative researchers from Japan and abroad for the study in the field of marine science.”

Onna Village Mayor Yoshimi Nagahama said that he looks forward to stronger cooperation between Onna Fishery Association and OIST to develop aqua farming technologies of sea grapes and mozuku seaweed, as well as the advanced research of deep-sea water.
