Yomitan fishermen build new business complex

Yomitan Village Fishermen’s Cooperative is replacing its old fish market building with a new complex that will house a fresh fish auction facility, a factory to process marine products and a restaurant. The new facility is scheduled to open in April 2017.

According to the association, it will be the first facility on Okinawa with an auction site and restaurant under the same roof. The new facility will include a casual dining restaurant, fresh fish retail outlet, and a customer reception area for diving and glass-bottom boats.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the construction site on July 21 with association members, contractors, and county and prefecture representatives in attendance.

The association points out that the present auction site was built 42 years ago and has deteriorated. Association members decided to have the auction site, factory and restaurant in one place when they rebuild it.

The facility will have two floors with a total floor space of 820 square meters. The auction site and the factory will be on the first floor, and the restaurant on the 2nd floor with a great panoramic ocean view.

The total construction cost of the facility is ¥286 million. The Ministry of Defense pays two thirds of the project while Yomitan Village and the association split the rest equally. The construction is expected to be completed by Feb. 20th, 2017, and the facility will open in April if all goes according to the schedule.
