Two drown in weekend Onna diving accidents

Naha Maritime Safety Agency received a report though the emergency center of Okinawa Sunday afternoon of a man drowning in an apparent diving accident at a famous snorkeling and diving spot called “Blue Grotto” in Cape Maeda, Onna Village.

The 37-year-old man was transported to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead later on the same day. According to Naha Maritime Safety Agency, the man had been swimming with his friend since noon, and drowned after exiting the Blue Grotto.

On Monday, a U.S. Navy sailor assigned to 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III MEF, was involved in an apparent diving mishap at Mermaid Grotto, at Manzamo, in Onna Village, resulting in his death at approximately 10:00, on Monday.

According to a press release from the Marine Public Affairs Officer, an official investigation into the exact cause of death has begun and no additional details of the incident are available at this time. The name of the sailor is withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin.
