Woman struck by car in Ginowan dies, driver arrested
Ginowan Police arrested the driver of a car who struck an elderly woman crossing a street in Maehara, Ginowan City, Monday evening. The woman who suffered serious injuries in the accident died.
According to police, 42-year-old Kenji Ogawa, the driver of the car, is suspected of been under influence when the accident happened. A breathalyzer test after the accident showed he had three times the legal limit of alcohol in his breath.
The victim, 82-year-old Kazuko Uesato was crossing the road when she was hit. Uesato was transferred to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
Ogawa has reportedly admitted to the charges, saying “I was on the way home after drinking at a bar.”
Police are investigating the accident as a suspected negligent driving resulting in injury and death, as well as a criminally dangerous driving resulting in injury and death.
As of Oct. 17, there has been 28 fatal traffic accidents this year in the prefecture, and 11 of them were caused by drunk drivers.
