No matter what health gurus and vegetarians might say, most of us like to have a nice juicy steak for a dinner once in a while. And if the dinner comes with a superb view over a sunset on Okinawa’s west coast, that much better. A steak restaurant on the top floor of a building next to Sunabe Seawall called Emerald Ocean Side fills all the attributes above. The restaurant opened just a little over a month ago, and has already attracted a steady clientele among people frequenting and living in the area.

The atmosphere in the restaurant is definitely American influenced, and for a good reason. Owner Yasuo Arata says, “I love everything about America. I go to America to study American-style cooking once a year, and try to bring the best what I learn back here to my restaurants.” Arata owns another steak restaurant called Pub Lounge Emerald at near the AEON Rycom Shopping Mall that has been in business for 37 years, and Emerald Ocean Side is his second restaurant.

Arata says he was looking for a good place to have a second restaurant for a long time and finally he found the place in Sunabe that he fell in love with. He says, “Here, the day and night time have different view and atmosphere. That’s why we play different music at different times to match the ambience, such as pop songs on daytime and blues at nights.”

The favorite steak dinner of Emerald Ocean Side is their original Emerald Steak that is a 10oz. thick steak with vegetables and the restaurant’s own homemade fries costing ¥2,200

Another popular item on the Emerald Ocean Side’s menu is Grilled Salmon. Even people, who don’t like fish as a rule, love it. The meal costs ¥1,800 and is worth of every yen. The salmon comes with both tomato basil sauce and lemon flavored white sauce.

The restaurant serves an all-day breakfast from 10:00 to 16:00 on weekends.

The lunch menu consists of a variety of sandwiches, such as a BBQ Lover that has fresh vegetables, pulled smoked and barbequed pulled pork with BBQ sauce, and Cajun Shrimp. The sandwich lunches run from ¥800 to ¥1,350. All sandwich lunches are available for take out.

Happy Hours run every day from 15:00 to 18:00, when all drinks and food are 10% off. Beers, wine, and cocktails are served and cost from ¥500 and up for beers and ¥650 and up for wine and cocktails. Even those who are not interested in a dinner, the Happy Hour is an excellent place to enjoy the magnificent Sunabe sunsets. The Happy Hour continues through the end of November.

The restaurant accepts major credit cards, dollars, and Japanese yen. It opens noon on weekdays with the last order at 20:30, and at 10:00 on weekends with the last order at 20:30.
