Newspaper carrier arrested for driving under influence

Naha Police arrested a 51-year-old newspaper carrier on suspicion of driving under influence in Shuri, Naha.

According to police, Hiroshi Arakaki, a newspaper carrier for Ryukyu Shinpo was arrested while he was delivering newspapers on a motorcycle along his regular delivery route. When stopped, he told police, “I thought that I had already sobered up,” and denied the charge. He was arrested on the spot.

A police patrol stopped Arakaki around 4:16 a.m. on Monday. A breathalyzer test showed that he had about 1.5 times the legal limit of alcohol in his breath.

After Arakki’s arrest, the Ryukyu Shinpo newspaper issued a statement saying, “Driving under influence cannot be forgiven. We are going to instruct the contractor to order all his employees to comply with the law, and make efforts to prevent a recurrence.”
