Naha City is getting ready to accept applications for municipal housing from same sex couples who have registered their marriage with the municipal registration system for couples. The new rule is expected to take effect as early as January 2017.

Currently, the application for the municipal housing is restricted to relatives within the sixth degree of consanguinity or third degree of relationship by blood.

Naha City introduced the partnership registration system earlier this year and started issuing certificates on July 8.

Applications for the municipal housing will be accepted from Jan. 10 next year. The applications are accepted by mail. Successful applicants are selected by a lottery.
