Okinawa Prefecture Tax Affairs Section announced that the total amount of so called “Hometown tax” paid to the prefecture since Governor Takeshi Onaga took office a year and 10 months ago has accrued more than ¥84 million.

“Hometown Tax” is a system, in which taxpayers can choose to divert part of their residential tax to a specified local government instead of it all going to the prefecture where they reside. The system was introduced in fiscal 2008. The amount of Hometown tax paid to Okinawa Prefecture during Governor Onaga’s administration is as of now 2.35 times more than the total ¥36.04 million received during the whole 6-year 8-month tenure of the former Governor Hirokazu Nakaima.

According to Okinawa Tax Affairs Section, most of the people who have paid the tax are not from Okinawa. An increasing number of people have directed the tax to Okinawa as a way of donating to the Governor who is opposing the construction of a new U.S. base in Henoko.

Okinawa joined in the Hometown Tax system in fiscal 2008 as the “Churashima Yuimaru Donation.” 1,493 Hometown Tax payments were recorded from December 2014 when Onaga took office as the Governor through October 2016.
