As Christmas is closing in, a request brought up in many families is to have a pet, and those who already have one will inevitably want to purchase a Christmas gift to their furry four-legged family member, as everyone else will have something under the Christmas tree, too.

Coo & Riku is one of the largest and best known pet shop chains in Japan. A visit to Coo & Riku Urasoe branch is a visit to a paradise for both pets and people. The first floor of the shop is an animal heaven, with more than 3,000 pet items available, set up by category to make it easy to find just the right item quickly. For Christmas, premium dog foods by Propac, Royal Canin, Vet’s Plan and Hills Pro are all 20% off.

The pet sales section is also on the first floor. Sofas are set in front of the cages for potential buyers to spend some one-on-one time to see if the animal’s “just right”. Coo & Riku Store Manager Shinya Kohata encourages customers to take advantage of this

Coo & Riku also offers a selection of 7,000 pets from their more than 130 branches across Japan through their website, Moving the pet from any of the branches within Japan to Okinawa is free; up to two pets per family.

On the second floor of the shop, there’s a cat café where a customer can enjoy a cup of good coffee and have a tasty treat served to his or her pet. The treats cost from ¥550 up and include smoked chicken, smoked pork and a meatball set. There’s even a birthday cake made for dogs that costs ¥980. Other facilities include an animal clinic and trimming room.

Please do not support pet stores which sell pets for a profit. These are animals, not toys to be displayed and bought. Many of the animals from pet stores are abandoned by their owners and left to die. The Ozato Animal Shelter at Okinawa kills 20 stray cats and dogs EVERYDAY. If you love animals and want to adopt a dog or cat please visit one of your neighborhood animal shelters such as Cherubims (cherubims.or.jp), Animal Garden (www.okianimalgarden.com), Doggies Inc (http://www.doggiesinc.org/) or OAARS (www.oaarsrescue.com) where loving animals are available for adoption.
