Two nabbed for smuggling 15kg of gold from Taiwan

Ishigaki Maritime Safety Agency and Okinawa Customs Ishigaki Branch Office arrested two Taiwanese nationals on suspicion of trying to smuggle gold into Japan without declaring it to the Customs.

40-year-old Shu Cheng Ming and 32-year-old Shai Jeng Tieng, both from Taiwan, are suspected of violating the Japanese Customs Act and the Consumption Tax Law. The two are suspected of attempting to bring 15kg of gold worth ¥62 million without properly declaring it at the customs.

According to Ishigaki Maritime Safety Agency, the men arrived at Ishigaki Port on Nev. 30th from Keelung, Taiwan, onboard Cruise Ship Super Star Aquarius. When they tried to walk through the customs counter, officers discovered that they carried about 3 kg of gold in their trouser pockets. Another 12 kg was found in the cabin Shu occupied onboard the ship.

Naha District Public Prosecutor’s Office decided Dec. 22nd to bring charges against both men.
