A fire on the second floor of a three-story apartment building in Yamauchi, Okinawa City, Tuesday afternoon, left an elderly female resident dead and the second floor of the building completely destroyed.

According to Okinawa City Fire Department, the neighbor called the fire station at 5:40 on Apr. 18. The second floor of the building, about 165 square meters was entirely destroyed before the fire was doused off at 8:18 p.m. in the evening.

A 88-year-old woman who lived in the apartment was found in a serious condition and taken to a hospital where she died later on the same day.

Okinawa City police are investigating the cause of the fire.
