GODAC opens website showing deep sea marine litter

The Global Oceanographic Data Center (GODAC) in Nago City has opened a website that includes a database and images and videos of marine litter in the deep sea within the Japanese exclusive economic zone. GODAC says they would like people to visit the website to think about environmental problems.

GODAC selected information on the website from images and videos that were taken by research vessels and probes of Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), and classified them by places where they were found and types of litter. There are 680 images and 1,672 videos, including tens of them located near Okinawa.

On the website, one can see various types of trash, including a sandal found 713 meters deep in Okinawa Trough, as well as a head of a mannequin 6,280 meters deep in the Japan Trench.
