Okinawan Daigo Higa wins flyweight World Champion title

The World Boxing Council flyweight title match was held on the night of May 20 at Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo.

In the fight, 21-year-old Daigo Higa from Okinawa faced 30-year-old Juan Hernandez of Mexico, the No.1 flyweight fighter in the world and the defending champion, who was stripped of his title for exceeding the weight limit the day before. Higa defeated Hernandez 2 minutes 28 seconds into the 6th round to became the new champion by TKO. In the 6th round, Higa downed Hernandez four times, and was finished by a left hook to the body.

Higa became the first undisputed world champion from Okinawa 25 years after Akinobu Hiranaka had the title. He became the 9th boxer from Okinawa Prefecture to win the title.
